Matthew Ball Quintet

The group performed at Scarborough Jazz Festival 2006, Wigan International Jazz Festival 2007, Wakefield Jazz Club, Hull Jazz Club, Jazz at the Priestley Centre (Bradford), Jazz at the Picture House (Sheffield) and Leeds venues The Wardrobe, The Spin Off, Seven Arts Centre, North Leeds Jazz and a Live Lounge session for BBC radio Leeds.
Great set, great arrangements, great front-man … What a way to open the final day [of the Scarborough Jazz Festival 2006]
Alan Barnes, award-winning saxophonist
Matt Ball's excellent quintet offers the archetype of a hard bop band… With good presentation, communicative announcements, tidy matching suits, a thoughtful programme, and a twelve-bar sting to end the set neatly, the quintet provided an enjoyable professional performance.
John Robert Brown, Chairman of the Saxophone Society of Great Britain
The Matthew Ball Quintet plays a mixture of original compositions and standard songs, all arranged to push the boundaries of the instruments … In contrast to these exciting innovative arrangements the band also uses flugal/trombone to produce mellow timbres and sustained intensity during ballads.
The ensemble performs a varied programme, performing Matt’s exciting original compositions and one or two jazz standards re-arranged as you won’t have heard them before! The group’s material is influenced by, and emulates stylistically, groups such as The Cannonball Adderley Quintet, Horace Silver’s Quintet and Wynton Marsalis’ Septet.
The repertoire is modern jazz with a strong emphasis on rhythmic patterns and grooves in unusual time signatures, while not forgetting the roots of jazz, encompassing blues, swing and New Orleans styles.
